The Future of POS Integrations
Before EMV, POS software companies (ISVs) and merchants would have a software developer integrate credit and debit card processing directly into their point of sale (POS) system. This was typically done by connecting payment terminals or card swipe hardware to a POS system, which allowed the merchant to accept payments. Today, POS integrations are much different. PrismPay and POS Cloud Connect can help you with the process. The future of POS integrations will be centered around EMV and the payment infrastructure surrounding it. EMV has introduced a new set of requirements that has significantly complicated an ISV’s and merchant’s ability to implement PCI Compliant payment solutions at a reasonable cost. The arrival of EMV and PIN-based payment transactions has increased cost and complicated payment integrations in a number of ways. Life Before EMV
Prior to EMV (Chip & PIN) cards, POS integrations were much easier for ISVs and merchants to achieve. They could use a simple mag-stripe reader or terminals connected to the POS or cash register to swipe and capture credit card data and send to the payment processor (such as WorldPay, FDMS, TSYS, Chase Paymentech, etc). The clerk would ring up a new sales transaction on the POS or cash register and automatically send the amount to the terminal that is tethered to the cash register via a USB or serial connection. The customer was then prompted on the terminal screen to swipe their card and, if debit, enter their PIN. The card data was then sent back to the POS system, which forwards the data to the payment gateway or directly to the payment processing platform. With that advent of EMV, things are very different today.Sign Up Now
The Future of POS Integration
The future of POS integrations will be centered around EMV and the payment infrastructure surrounding it. EMV has introduced a new set of requirements that has significantly complicated an ISV’s and merchant’s ability to implement PCI Compliant payment solutions at a reasonable cost. The arrival of EMV and PIN-based payment transactions has increased cost and complicated payment integrations in a number of ways.
It requires the payment application on the terminal to be certified for POS or cash register software as well as payment gateway. This is in addition to being certified to the payment process platform and card brand (such as MasterCard, Visa, American Express, etc.). Each terminal model also is required to be certified to each payment gateway and processor separately. This number of certifications and the time it requires has exponentially increased costs. The whole certification process takes about three months and costs approximately $40,000 when fees, time, and EMV tools per platform are accounted for. Furthermore, modifying the payment application on the terminals requires re-certification. This essentially means the entire process must be restarted.
How to Adapt to EMV
Now, ISVs and merchants have two basic options to adhere to EMV. These are fully integrated or semi-integrated solutions. A fully integrated solution has the POS software integrated directly to the payment terminal. It receives credit card data and sends it to the payment processor. This puts the ISV and merchant directly in the EMV certification and PCI compliance scope, since the credit card data flows through the POS system. Unfortunately, the result is an expensive nightmare for ISVs and merchants.
Semi-integrated solutions take the POS system out of the EMV certification and PCI compliance scope by eliminating the need for the credit card data to flow through the POS system. Semi-integration provides ISVs and merchants a cost-effective EMV implementation with minimal impact. PrismPay’s POS Cloud Connect provides ISVs and merchants with a semi-integrated solution so they are out of the EMV PCI and PA/DSS certification and compliance scope and can focus on their primary business.Sign Up Now
